Pink Surly 1x1 in a puddle

Why it is when you think of something you don't want to happen it happens? After listening to a series of loud rim-bangs I thought to myself "Lucky not to get a punch flat" *BANG* guess what... *PSSSSSssss*

Not a nice thing to happen at over 20mph on a very bumpy path. A path who's roughness has increased a huge amount due to the amount of rain recently.

I had it coming though, riding around the local area's been getting less and less smooth on a rigid bike due to the 9 inches of rain in the last 18 days washing all the dirt from between rocks and leaving massive gouges in the trails.

* as you can see the Surly's sporting *another* rear wheel today (hmm red and pink - barf), the SRAM wheel I put in to replace the broken Hope XC lasted all of 10 minutes before that freehub also started to cracking... which is probably the reason the wheel's not been used for two years!

One Month To Go

14 Jul 2007 at 15:19

Only one month to go now

I'm wondering if I'll ever ride the Surly with two working brakes again. In the last 3 weeks I've had 2 days where the rear brake's worked properly, and the rest where I've been riding on backing plates or not working at all.

Even a swap of brake to my old O2 has failed: Ride1: brake develops no lever throw so it's either off or locked, Ride2: pulling the lever to the bar fails to do anything, Ride3: starts off like ride 2 ends like ride 1, so pretty much no braking.

My freehub also died entirely today luckly I managed to get to the top of the last hill before home before I pushed the crank and it tore all the teeth on the ratchet off leaving me with a double freehub! - I've almost run out of brakes and wheels for the Surly now.

I only got soaked from th waist down today - maybe that's from the feet up? although it did rain, so I'm keeping my record going.

MIlestone #4 of the Week

13 Jul 2007 at 18:45

The only milestone I could find for today was ride number 250 on the Surly.

It was a VERY VERY wet ride (and windy), but warm again (for this year anyway) so I didn't wear a jacket.

My rear pads yet again dissolved somewhere on Winter Hill, only two brake pulls into the ride. So the the majority of the ride was spent trying not to go to fast into loose / broken / muddy corners because front would cause crashing.

Im going to assume the pads, which were put in in April 2006 were organic and maybe degraded a bit.. but at least I made some pads last almost 15 months!

Despite the terrible weather, scary braking and shredded trails, today's ride was alright... I'd quite like to see the sun again soon, the great tanlines I had in April have been sanded away.

Milestone #1 of the Week.

The Surly is now 6,000 miles old!

Hope O2

Off came the Avid Juicy 5 and back on went the 1998 Hope O2. It feels bloody awful at the moment, to be honest, so I'll have to rebuild it at the weekend. (along with the entire drivetrain on the roadster that creaks like mad after last sundays sogfest)

Hope O2

I managed to keep up me 32 day record of being rained on... today was only heavy drizzle for a few minutes and lots of puddles..Still very windy.

In the Summer, Summertime.. In the Summertime

09 Jul 2007 at 13:59

I think the my most memorable summer was 1994, the one between School and University. It seemed long and hot, I wasn't particularly excited about going to university, after all it's just another type of school.

The 10 week holiday was nice, playing football all day almost everyday, working 5:30am - 9:30am in the papershop, sunshine, stress free.

I tried to make the most of today as it's the first time in 25 days the weather's not been totally dreadful. I'd go so far as to say it was 'alright' not up to July standards really, maybe a c+ for July, but if it were April I'd give it at A-

Still a reasonable amount of floodage, but now some of the path have dried they've been left gouged and bumpy with large lose rocks strewn everywhere... a nightmare on a rigid bike

I was going to hit the road and search for the 'S' in 'Suffering' but it poured down with rain at the exact moment I clicked my Sidis up. However it only seemed to have rained on my house as 100m up the street the tarmac was dry as a bone - weird.
30.5 miles.
